Sean Kelly is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest ever sportspeople and one of the finest professional cyclists of his generation. Born and raised near Carrick-on-Suir, Kelly’s rise from rural Tipperary roads to international cycling fame reflected the hardworking spirit of the town shaped by endurance, community and ambition.
During a remarkable career spanning the 1980s and early 1990s, Kelly won multiple Classics, the Vuelta a España and Paris-Nice a record seven consecutive times. When Michael Coady wrote Heritage and Hope in 1982, he imagined St. Nicholas’ Church transformed into a living cultural space — a place of memory, creativity, research, storytelling and community connection. He believed the site could become “the informed setting for a dynamic present and a confident future.”
Today, that vision lives on through the Tides of Time Experience.
The restored church now welcomes visitors into an immersive journey through the people, stories and spirit of Carrick-on-Suir. What began as a hopeful appeal for restoration has evolved into a vibrant heritage destination that honours the town’s past while creating new opportunities for culture, tourism, education and community life.
