Tides of Time Visitor Centre will welcome renowned archaeologist Professor Muiris O’Sullivan to Carrick-on-Suir this October for a fascinating talk exploring one of the region’s most remarkable prehistoric monuments — Knockroe Passage Tomb.
Dating back approximately 5,000 years, the megalithic monument at Knockroe, near Ahenny, is renowned for its ancient art and extraordinary solar alignments. Professor O’Sullivan will explore what archaeology has revealed about the monument, its construction and the lives and beliefs of the people who created it.
Professor O’Sullivan is Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at UCD and a former Head of the UCD School of Archaeology. He is particularly well known locally for his excavations at Knockroe Passage Tomb in the Slate Quarries, a short distance north of Ahenny.
His archaeological work extends to some of Ireland’s most significant ancient sites. He has published extensively on the Mound of the Hostages at the Hill of Tara, was involved in excavations at Knowth during the 1980s, and more recently served as lead archaeological consultant for the renewal of the visitor experience at Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A highly experienced writer and lecturer, Professor O’Sullivan is passionate about making specialist archaeological knowledge accessible to a wider audience and about the important role local communities and landowners play in understanding and protecting Ireland’s heritage.
The talk promises a fascinating opportunity to discover the story of an extraordinary monument on the Tipperary–Kilkenny border and to learn more about the people who lived in this landscape five millennia ago.
Tickets are €6 and are available through Eventbrite. Places are limited, so early booking is recommended.
